Groups and organizations play a huge part in organizing, supporting, and initiating changes in the United States. Organizations or associations also act as support services for alcoholics, drug addicts, other addicts, disorders, diseases, viruses, and disabilities. In America there exists support systems like these for everyone that has an interest in something, has a goal to achieve, or is suffering from some type of life altering circumstance. Blind people are no exception to this rule, and are people that need perhaps the most support for their condition. Blind associations all across the country are organizations that work toward supporting the blind. These organizations differ from state to state and are usually non profit based. There are also some associations that are national based and reach out to a wider range of individuals. An association for the blind provides support and assistance to the blind and their families. Sometimes family members need to join these blind associations to show support for their blind family member, and to learn a little bit more on how to handle living with the blind. An association for the blind offers better access to government benefits, and may offer some monetary funds of their own. These associations are instrumental in lobbying for blind individuals in local, state, and national governments.
The American Association for blind people provides newsletters for its members that includes current news articles relating to blindness and the rest of the disability community. They also offer a directory of technology and product services both new and old, that can assist blind people in everyday activities.
Another national association for the blind is the National Association for parents of the Visually Impaired. This association is unique in that it first non profit, and its run by and for parents. This is important because parents that may not be blind, may not know how to take care of a child that is. This program provides support and services to the parents of blind children.
Some other blind associations that work on a national level include, the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the American Council of the Blind, and the National Federation of the Blind. All of these blind associations have been around for more than thirty years. They all aim to support blind individuals and their families. These blind associations are most useful because they all connect there members to thousands of other people with the same disability, and to other organizations that may be private or state level programs. An association for the blind doesn’t have to just be limited to a support based group, or a group that provides outlets for care. An association for the blind can be a fun, social based association as well. For example, the American blind bowling association, aims to provide a social outlet where the blind, along with family and friends, can have a good time and take their minds of their disability. The development of special guard rails has made this possible for the organization to provide. These blind organizations need to be praised for provide assistance, hope and guidance for the blind. Many times these organizations bring back a sense of life for people with this disability.
