People that are disabled are often looked at like they are less than or incapable of functioning. The common misconception about the disabled is that every disability is noticeably. While is this half true, many disabled people have physical disabilities that can be easily noticed. However, there are other disabilities that people can have, that are not noticeable, which gives them the leeway to lead pretty normal and even extravagant lives. Many famous people from the past and the present have been disabled and still managed to be successful in life. Some of them have had physical disabilities, and others have had more sensory, cognitive, or health related disabilities.
Albert Einstein was disabled until the age of three. He had a condition that prevented him from speaking a word until he was this age. He went on to become one of the most intelligent of his time, and any time for that matter. His inventions and theories have enabled mankind to progress in more ways then one. Christopher Reeve, best known for playing superman, was crippled after a horse riding injury and was disabled for the rest of his life. Even while suffering from paralysis, he managed to help others overcome hardship relating to disabilities by becoming an advocate for medical research.
Sarah Bernhardt was a French actress who became disabled when she suffered a knee injury. She remained an actress and continued to perform on stage with one leg up until the day she died. She proves that disabled people can do anything despite their conditions.
Robin Williams is one of he disabled people that suffered from ADHD. He never used medication for it, and instead focused his energy to acting. ADHD is attention deficit disorder, and can be very distracting in a classroom setting and as an actor. Tom Cruise, another notable actor, suffers from dyslexia and still manages to read scripts. He, like Mr. Williams, never gave up. These are examples of how someone tackled their disability head on instead of being fearful of it. These two issues are dealt with on a daily basis. Remembering a script can be hard for anyone and a actor with disabilities especially.
Other disabled people that are famous include; her who has dyslexia, Alexander Graham Bell who had a learning disability, Helen Keller who was blind, deaf, and mute, George Washington who had a learning disability and could not write, and Ludwig van Beethoven who was deaf. All of these famous individuals have done many great things in their careers being disabled and all. Many people had no idea that some of these people had these problems. Being disabled doesn’t have to mean a life without striving for ones goals in life. Disabled people find new and innovative ways to communicate, interact, and remain active in society. Just because someone can walk, or speak, or hear, doesn’t mean that they can’t follow their dreams. Like many of these famous individuals, normal everyday folks engage in their favorite activities, and do what ever they want to do in life.
