In America the discrimination act is a piece of legislation used to protect human rights. The United States is a melting pot of different races, genders, and types of people. People of all kinds are allowed the opportunity to work and can not be discriminated against.
Discrimination acts protect women, African Americans and other minorities, people disabilities, and people who may be pregnant. These laws basically prohibit any business, agency, or government entity from discriminating on any person, for any reason. The idea is for everyone to be created equal and awarded the same opportunities. Equality is a huge factor in everything that goes on in the United States. Now, while the government can not prevent individuals from forming their own biases or discriminating in their personal lives, they can regulate businesses, and employers.
Women’s rights are fairly new in America when compared to other rights established in the constitution. For a while in history, women were not allowed to work in industries that men do, and when they were allowed, they received unequal pay. People who have disabilities are often treated differently and closed off from certain opportunities. Sometimes they are not allowed to work in certain places based of there disability. The same goes for pregnant women, in that an employer cannot refuse to hire a woman because she is newly pregnant. She gets a fair and equal opportunity to work.
