Reverse discrimination is discrimination against members of a dominant or majority group, or in favor of members of a minority or historically disadvantaged group. Groups may be defined in terms of race, gender, ethnicity, or other factors. This discrimination may seek to redress social inequalities where minority groups have been denied access to the same privileges of the majority group. For Example, African Americans discriminating against Caucasians based off of the events of the past like slavery, and Civil Rights Movement.
In such cases it is intended to stop discrimination that minority groups may already face. Reverse discrimination may also be used to highlight the discrimination that exists in affirmative action programs. Many employers will stop discrimination toward African Americans by being even more selective with there Caucasian counterparts
Reverse discrimination aims to remedy entrenched social inequalities when minority groups are unable to access the same privileges as the majority. Examples include the denial of access by minority groups to loans, housing, employment and opportunities for capital gain and class mobility. Reverse discrimination seeks to redress such inequalities. To stop discrimination however, is not recommended by using this tactic. Placing the same inequality’s on others that were not appreciated nor right when they were imposed on you is a negative and unsuccessful way to conquer discrimination itself.
In the United States of America, the term reverse discrimination has been used in past discussions of racial quotas or gender quotas for collegiate admission to government run educational institutions. Such policies were held to be unconstitutional in the United States, while non quota based methods, which may include race as a factor, including some affirmative action programs such as ;race as a factor, ethnic minorities, and physical, mental, or learning disabilities can be legal. This does not stop discrimination, it just gives it a new form to be used in. Quotas are pointless and do not need to be used, however when an institution wants a grant or loans then they will use them.
Nevertheless, some city governments still use racial quotas when awarding government contracts. This defers from the need to stop discrimination all together. The obsession with knowing how many people of each race exist within an area is unnecessary, and creates a class division that is not needed. When city governments do this, they create these set numbers of who business are allowed to hire of each race. This as well as other demonstrations of discrimination keep the competition grouped into races rather than open. The United States needs to stop discrimination all together and focus on the qualities people have. The governments makes the citizens think that discrimination is gone, however they are lying. Discrimination has just taken another form, and has laws that back it up. The whole idea of a quota or a set amount of certain types of individuals does not work out properly. Also, one must wonder why when the census is conducted each year, governments have to know the race of the individual taking a part in it.
